THE BLACK WEDDING DRESS
June 2011
"The Black Wedding Dress" was a cross-discipline collaboration with writer and performer, Michelle Murray, in June 2011 at the South Coast Regional Arts Centre. Michelle performed her poetic prose while I projected over 190 images onto an 8 foot charcoal drawing throughout the show. The project was self funded and was published in the August edition of Art Monthly Australia.
The Black Wedding Dress was written by Michelle Murray during
her Australian Poetry Cafe poet residency at Cafelicious,
Goolwa (on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia) in 2010.
Michelle then invited visual artists Nyorie Bungey, Michael
Bryant, Annabelle Collett, Yvonne East and Barbary O’Brien to
respond to the work in order to create a visual art exhibition and
performance at the Alexandrina Council South Coast Regional
Arts Centre, Goolwa in June 2011.
The Black Wedding Dress is a mythical poetic story of survival
and transformation. The main protagonist, Ana, is a young
Victorian-era woman who falls pregnant to her Aboriginal lover
and escapes a violent marriage and persecution by following him
deep into the desert.
Michelle Murray has published "The Black Wedding Dress" online. To see more, visit
